On September 18 and 19, 2023, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health held a two-day stakeholder roundtable in Lagos to advance the integration of family planning into health insurance and primary healthcare at the national and subnational level. The meeting, supported by PROPEL Health, was attended by over 50 stakeholders from federal- and state-level public and private organizations and partners from across the country. At the meeting, participants examined evidence from a PROPEL Health situational analysis of Nigeria’s national family planning program and its financing, after which participants co-created a plan to develop a comprehensive package of family planning services; devise mechanisms to contract, purchase from, and pay providers; and establish effective coordination and collaboration between different stakeholders. Participants reached consensus on including all family planning services in the benefits package so that young people, as well as women of childbearing age, can voluntarily access the full spectrum of family planning services. Next PROPEL Health will support the ministry to develop national guidance for state-level planning and implementation of integrating family planning into health insurance schemes and primary healthcare programs.
